The National Unity Party (UBP) celebrated its 44th anniversary with a reception last night at the Elysium Park in Lefkoşa.
The evening was attended by UBP leader and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, leader of the Peoples’ Party (HP) and Deputy Prime Minister-Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay, the Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçeri and the leader of the Rebirth Party Erhan Arıklı.
A short video promoting the party was screened at the event followed by speeches.
Addressing the reception, the UBP’s honorary leader, former President Derviş Eroğlu pointed out that Turkey was fighting against terrorists.
Stating that no one could remain silent on such important issues, he wished Turkey success at Operation Peace Spring.
Eroğlu also said that state and government officials should be careful when making remarks and should speak accordingly.
Pointing out that one of the UBP’s main missions was to preserve and protect the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Eroğlu said, “to keep relations with motherland Turkey at the highest level, to preserve the TRNC and to raise the prosperity of the Turkish Cypriot people is the UBP’s mission.”
The leader of the UBP and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar started his speech by wishing Turkey success in Operation Peace Spring.
Tatar said that Turkish Cypriots owed everything today to the struggle waged by the Turkish Armed Forces and Turkish Cypriot freedom fighters.
He added that the UBP was working to protect the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people.
“The crowd I see here today gives me courage and strength. We stand ready always,” he said.
Also touching upon the Cyprus Issue, Tatar said that much had happened since the 2004 Annan Plan with none of the promises made to the Turkish Cypriot people kept.
“The UBP had voted against the plan and had upheld the TRNC,” the Prime Minister recalled.
He said that the ongoing hydrocarbons crisis proved just how important a state the TRNC was which was why everything was needed to be done with the support of Turkey to keep the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus going.
