The process to form a new government following the collapse of the four-party coalition government is underway.
President Mustafa Akıncı is now meeting separately with leaders of the political parties with seats in the Republic’s Assembly before tasking one of them with the duty of forming a new government.
The President first met with the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Ersin Tatar at 9:30 this morning.
Tatar’s UBP currently holds a majority of 21 seats in the TRNC assembly and is expected to be assigned the task of forming the government.
Speaking to reporters after a half an hour meeting, Tatar said the alternatives were limited and the possibilities were obvious adding that the UBP will be in the government.
“The possibilities are obvious and the alternatives are not so much. We will evaluate the process at the authorized organs of the UBP and we will do what’s best for the country. There is a crisis and the process should be completed in the shortest time. We will first hold a meeting with our deputies and will then hold a party assembly meeting and finalize the process” Tatar said.
“Mr. President evaluated the process with us. We need to wait for the completion of process. The coalition government has collapsed. When we look at the numbers the UBP will be in the government” he added.
Stating that he expected the President to task him with the duty of forming a new government until Wednesday, Tatar said the party assembly will convene after this.
The UBP leader also added that they were holding unofficial talks with the People’s Party (HP).
“We will visit the CTP and other political parties also. We should act responsibly and do our best. We should consider the needs of the business world and economy. The possibilities are obvious and everyone should act responsibly” Tatar said.
President Akıncı then met with the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman at 10am.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with the President, Erhürman said that the President wanted to task a political party leader who could form a government.
“I have been saying from the first day that the task should be given to the UBP leader Ersin Tatar” the CTP leader said and added “I expressed the same view to the President today.”
Erhürman also said that the UBP was the only party to receive a vote of confidence as it has the most deputies at the parliament.
“I did not have any contacts with anyone over the weekend. I have been saying from the first day that the task should be given to Mr. Tatar but of course the President has the authority” Erhürman said.
President Akıncı received the leader of the Peoples’ Party (HP) Kudret Özersay at 10:30am.
Also speaking to reporters after the meeting, the HP leader Özersay announced that the party assembly will convene this evening to decide whether to remain as opposition or to hold government talks.
Noting that no decision had been taken by the HP yet, Özersay said “we’ve shared this with Mr. President and we also told him that we didn’t hold coalition talks with any political party.”
“As the People’s we made a short evaluation with the President. We started consultations within the party at the weekend. The party assembly will convene this evening. I don’t know if a decision will be taken or not this evening but we will decide whether to remain as opposition or to hold government talks” Özersay said.
“We will take two things into consideration. We will take the experiences we’ve learned at the government into consideration. We will also evaluate what we did and what we couldn’t during the 14, 15 month period and make our decision. We will consider the best option for the country. We will decide whether to remain as opposition or to take part in the coalition government. The party assembly has the authority. If the HP decides to hold coalition talks it will have its own conditions” the HP leader added.
Meanwhile, tomorrow morning, the President is scheduled to meet with the leader of the Social Democratic Party (TDP) Cemal Özyiğit at 9:30am, the leader of the Democrat Party (DP) Serdar Denktaş at 10am and the Rebirth Party (YDP) leader Erhan Arıklı at 10:30am.
The political parties in parliament will also be holding talks between themselves for a possible coalition.
Once the President meets with the leaders of all the parties in parliament he will be assigning the task to the one who will be able to secure a vote of confidence.
The MP assigned with forming the government has to do so within a period of 15 days and will have to return the duty if he or she fails.
In the event agreement is reached on forming a new government, President Akıncı will present to parliament the newly appointed Council of Ministers.
The new government program will need to be read out in parliament by the Prime Minister or another Minister within a week after the list is presented.
A debate will begin two full days after the programme is read out and a vote of confidence will be held a day after the debate is completed.
According to the constitution, the opposition cannot submit a motion of no-confidence to parliament in the first three months of the new government’s term in office.
