The 45th anniversary of the liberation of Lefke following the second phase of the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation was marked with various ceremonies.
A ceremony was held at the Atatürk Park in Lefke to celebrate the anniversary of the town’s liberation.
Wreaths were laid at the Atatürk Monument, a minutes silence was observed and the national anthem was recited.
Poems marking the importance of the day were read and folk dance performances also took place.
The ceremonial units performed and a helicopter flew over the ceremonial grounds.
The acting speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre, Lefke the Mayor of Lefke Aziz Kaya and representatives from the Turkish Peace Forces in Cyprus and the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces were all present at the ceremony.
Speaking during the ceremony the acting Speaker of the TRNC Parliament Zorlu Töre said that the Cyprus Issue was a national cause which was carried out jointly with Turkey.
He said that the Turkish Cypriot people had put up a heroic resistance against Greek and Greek Cypriot attacks by forming the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT) until Turkey’s intervention in 1974.
“The Turkish Armed Forces and our freedom fighters fought so these lands could become our homeland. We live in freedom and security today and look towards the future with hope. We have our state and should uphold this state”, he added.
Töre also said the Turkish Cypriot people will never abandon Turkey’s active and effective guarantees in Cyprus.
The ceremony came to an end with a short military parade.
