The Vice President of the EU Commission and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell paid a visit to Turkey.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu received Mr Borrell at his office in Ankara.
The two men held a joint press conference after their meeting.
Speaking first Mr Borrell said that he had paid a visit to Ankara to help remove tensions in the region.
“The European Union will do all it can so that the hydrocarbon issue can be divided equally among the two peoples on the island of Cyprus,” said Borrell.
Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu for his part said that the real culprit behind all the problems in the Eastern Mediterranean’s energy issue is the Greek Cypriot administration as they embarked on their seismic research activities by ignoring the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.
“We have warned the EU on several occasions regarding this issue but they did not pay heed to our warnings, therefore, we have sent our drillships in addition to our seismic research activities,” said Çavuşoğlu.
