The Minister of Public Works and Communications Tolga Atakan said that four million passengers have gone through Ercan Airport in 2018.
Speaking to the Anadolu news agency, Atakan said that Ercan’s new terminal building should become operational as soon as possible.
He added that the airport was currently not able to meet the needs of the TRNC economy which was based on tourism and universities.
Atakan said that a six to seven month delay is expected for the completion of the new terminal building as well as wider runways for larger planes.
“Turkish Cypriots living abroad have plans to create a new airline. If they succeed in doing this Ercan could become a hotspot,” he said.
The TRNC public works and communications minister also said that work was underway to lower communication tariffs.
“Normally prices are at international standards but when we end up adding VAT and other taxes then prices tend to go up,” he added.
