The annual Yeniboğaziçi Pulya (Blackcap Bird) Festival kicked off on Friday.
The opening ceremony of the festival was attended by President Mustafa Akıncı and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar.
The festival which will host several cultural, artistic and sports events will continue until Sunday, August 25.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Yeniboğaziçi Mustafa Zurnalar said that the festival aimed to promote the area’s natural beauties and to pass this onto future generations.
Zurnacılar said that the festival was an important part of ongoing work carried out to boost tourism in the area.
Prime Minister Ersin Tatar who also spoke at the event highlighted the importance of the festival for the region.
He expressed the hope that the event will contribute to bringing life to the economy in the area.
Delivering the final speech of the evening, President Mustafa Akıncı said that the quality of the festival could be measured with the number of visitors.
He congratulated the organisers for the high turnout.
Akıncı pointed out that the name of the festival Pulya, which is a migratory bird, created the wrong impression among certain circles, particularly natural conservationists.
“The aim of the festival is not to trap and eat Pulya. The bird which visits the area is only a symbol,” he said.
