The new judicial year began today.
The 2018-2019 Judicial Year began with a ceremony at the Lefkoşa Open Education Faculty’s Conference Salon this morning.
The ceremony was broadcast live on BRT and guests from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey attended the opening ceremony.
President Mustafa Akıncı, Parliamentary Speaker Teberrüken Uluçay, Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Derya Kanbay, military officials, some ministers, people from the legal community and other officials all took part in the ceremony.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Narin Ferdi Şefik, the head of the Bar Association Hasan Esendağlı and President Mustafa Akıncı delivered speeches during the event.
High ranking officials from the Constitutional Court in Turkey, Supreme Court of Appeals, Court of Disputes and the Turkish Grand National Assembly all took part in the event.
The first speech of the day was delivered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Narin Ferdi Şefik who touched upon all the deficiencies that the new judicial year is beginning with.
She said that steps needed to be taken to overcome the problems being experienced in the public sector.
She also noted that the number of cases at the courts would increase this year due to the economic crisis.
President Mustafa Akıncı during his address noted that every year the new judicial year began with similar problems and therefore a great duty and responsibility fell upon everyone to overcome these problems.
“The problems with the court building, insufficient amounts of personnel, the increase of cases the years just go by but the problems don’t change” said President Akıncı and added that with the crisis in the foreign currency rates the number of cases that the courts will see this year will definitely increase.
Touching upon the meeting that will take place in New York next week on the Cyprus issue, President Mustafa Akıncı said that the Turkish Cypriot side has not given up on its belief that a solution can be found.
“We will continue our efforts, hopefully this will be reciprocated and new steps will be taken” said Akıncı.
