The leader of the main opposition National Unity Party (UBP) Ersin Tatar launched talks today with leaders of the political parties in the TRNC parliament with the aim of forming a new coalition government.
Tatar was handed the mandate of forming the new government by President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday.
In the afternoon, the UBP’s party assembly gave full authority to Tatar to carry out coalition talks on behalf of the party.
Speaking afterwards Tatar said that their aim was to finalize talks before the end of the week.
The UBP leader Tatar’s first meeting today was with the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman at 10am.
Tatar is being accompanied by the UBP General Secretary Hasan Taçoy, MPs Özdemir Berova, Nazım Çavuşoğlu and Dursun Oğuz.
The UBP leader and his accompanying delegation were greeted by CTP leader Tufan Erhürman.
Speaking after the meeting, Tatar said that they had held a positive meeting with officials from the CTP which had the second highest number of seats in the TRNC parliament.
He said that today’s meeting was just a preliminary meeting and that they would hold a general evaluation once he met with leaders of all the parties.
“We had a discussion on possibilities. It will either be a UBP-CTP, a UBP-HP coalition or early elections,” he said.
CTP leader Tufan Erhürman for his part said that he had held a positive meeting with UBP officials and that today’s meeting was a preliminary meeting.
He, however, added that there was nothing for the CTP to evaluate and that a two-party UBP-HP coalition continued to be the most likely coalition scenario at the moment.
Tatar’s next stop was the Peoples’ Party (HP) where he met with the HP leader Kudret Özersay at 11am.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the UBP leader said that he had held a positive meeting with HP leader Özersay during which they exchanged the latest political developments.
Tatar said that his meetings with the other political parties will continue today and that they will have a clearer picture on the way forward once these preliminary meetings are completed.
“This is how the process works. We shall evaluate our meetings held today. We do not have a concrete decision to form a coalition with any of the parties. But as I said earlier today the possibilities are limited. We can either have a UBP-CTP coalition, a UBP-HP coalition or an interim government until we hold early elections,” he said.
The leader of the Peoples’ Party Kudret Özersay for his part said that it was too early to say anything.
“We were more on the listening side today. We listened to what the UBP had to say and conveyed our position. We shall discuss the matter in more detail with the party’s authorised bodies,” said Özersay.
The HP leader also pointed out that there were different coalition possibilities and the most realistic one should emerge in the coming days.
Commenting on the possibility of a UBP-HP coalition, Özersay said that chances of entering a coalition with the UBP were the same as not entering a coalition.
“We did not go into details at today’s meeting. Both sides have sensitivities which they have expressed,” Özersay added.
Responding to a question, Özersay also complained that attempts were being made to create a false perception that a coalition between his party and the UBP was a done deal.
In the afternoon he will meet with the leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktaş.
Tatar will also be meeting with the leader of the Social Democratic Party Cemal Özyiğit at 3pm and the leader of the Rebirth Party Erhan Arıklı at 4pm.
