The National Unity Party and the Peoples’ Party (HP) will resume talks aimed at forming a coalition government on Friday, it has been announced.
The meeting between the two parties is scheduled to take place at 2pm tomorrow.
Meanwhile, UBP leader Ersin Tatar who was handed the mandate by President Akıncı to form a new government carried out visits to the other political parties in the TRNC parliament yesterday.
Within this framework, the UBP leader had visited the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the People’s Party (HP) respectively yesterday morning.
In the afternoon, Tatar paid separate visits to the Democrat Party (DP), the Social Democratic Party (TDP) and the Rebirth Party (YDP).
Speaking after his meeting with the UBP leader, the DP Leader Denktaş said that he briefed Tatar on the situation of the treasury and budget during the meeting.
“Now the responsibility lies with the UBP. Mr. Tatar has a big burden on his shoulders. We shall continue to do everything for the further development of the country whilst acting responsibly in the opposition” Denktaş said.
The UBP leader Tatar for his part said that they exchanged views on the treasury and the economic situation in the country.
“Everyone should act with a sense of responsibility. We should not abuse our authority as there is a big crisis and financial problem” Tatar said.
The TDP leader Cemal Özyiğit who spoke to press after his meeting with Tatar reminded that the UBP leader referred to an interim government if a coalition could not be possible with the CTP or the HP.
He said “the government should be established as soon as possible.”
The leader of the YDP Erhan Arıklı for his part reiterated his party’s readiness to support an interim government.
“We think that alongside early elections the Election and Referendum Law should also be revised. We also discussed this issue. If the UBP and the HP fail to form a coalition then the formula we’ve proposed should be brought to agenda. The country has no time to lose. An early election should be held if the need arises” Arıklı said.
Tatar for his part said that the UBP was looking into a formula of forming a coalition either with the CTP or the HP but added that holding early elections was also an option.
“We discussed this with the YDP. We want the best for our country. We have no time to lose. The Election and Referendum Law should be amended whether there will be an early election or not. We should bring this to the parliament before the summer holiday. It’s not right to hold the elections with the current law” Tatar said.
