Former Prime Minister and the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) İrsen Küçük lost his life yesterday morning.
Küçük lost his life at the American Medical Centre in South Cyprus where he had been receiving treatment for a while.
It’s been announced that İrsen Küçük’s death was due to coronary failure.
İrsen Küçük who had received treatment at the semi intensive care service of the American Medical Centre in South Cyprus due to health problems he experienced following influenza since the 27th of December 2018 was discharged from the hospital on the 20th of February 2019 however was hospitalised again on the 2nd of March as he lost ground.
The former TRNC Prime Minister İrsen Küçük was a nephew of former Vice President of Cyprus Republic Dr. Fazıl Küçük.
İrsen Küçük who was born in Lefkoşa in 1940 graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture of Ankara University in 1966.
Küçük who also received a master degree on soil conversation and agricultural irrigation worked as an operating engineer at the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works of Turkey between 1966 and 1968.
He then served at the Livestock Department of the Cyprus Republic for 5 years between 1968 and 1973.
Küçük who resigned for this post in 1973 established his own business where he carried out his work in the field of agriculture and livestock breeding.
He also served as the President of Chamber of Agricultural Engineers and the Erenköy Fighters Society during this period.
Küçük who was elected to the parliament as a National Unity Party MP during the general elections held in 1976 and 1981 was also elected as a member of the constituent assembly established in 1983.
He served as the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Energy between 1976 and 1981 and 1982 and 1983 and as the Minister of Health, Social Affairs and Labour between 1981 and 1982.
Küçük who resigned from the National Unity Party and established the Communal Development Party returned to the UBP following a failure at the general elections.
He was again elected as a Lefkoşa MP from the UBP at the early elections held in 1993 and served as the Head of the UBP Lefkoşa Branch.
Küçük was re-elected to the parliament as a Lefkoşa MP from the UBP at the general elections held on the 6th of December 1998 and served as the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry at the UBP-TKP coalition government established after the elections.
He continued to serve as the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry at the UBP-DP coalition government established in 2001.
Küçük left this post when his party became opposition in 2004 and was elected as the General Secretary of the UBP during this period.
He did not take part in the cabinet when the UBP succeeded at the general elections and established the government in 2009.
Küçük who had served as an acting leader of the National Unity Party when Derviş Eroğlu was elected as the president in 2010 was then elected as the leader of the UBP at an extraordinary congress.
He was re-elected as the leader of the UBP at the ordinary party congress in 2010 and served as prime minister for a while.
İrsen Küçük who knew English and Greek was married and had two children.
Meanwhile, Küçük will be laid to rest following a state ceremony at the Republic’s Assembly on Wednesday, the 13th of March.
