The Founding Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and a former Leader of the National Unity Party-Mustafa Çağatay was remembered on the 26th anniversary of his death.
A ceremony was held at the former Prime Minister’s graveside in Karaoğlanoğlu.
Wreaths were laid and a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Mustafa Çağatay.
The ceremony was attended by President Derviş Eroğlu, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Sibel Siber, Prime Minister Özkan Yorgancıoğlu, and the head of the Supreme Court Şafak Öneri as well as other high ranking government and state officials.
Addressing the ceremony, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Sibel Siber said that Çağatay would always be remembered for his honesty, modesty and hardworking personality.
She said that the late Çağatay had left behind an impressive legacy and an impeccable career.
Also delivering a speech, President Derviş Eroğlu said that Çağatay had contributed greatly to Turkish Cypriot politics.
Stating that they had all learned much from his determined personality, Eroğlu said “he was an example to all of us with his patience, his manners and modesty”.
Çağatay who was born in Limassol in 1937 had been serving as Prime Minister of the Cyprus Turkish Federated State when the TRNC was declared in 1983.
The late Çağatay was killed in a traffic accident on the 3rd of April 1984.
